On Tuesdays, Hazel is at daycamp at the Trailhead Children's Museum in the Mt. Crested Butte base area. Tygh and I faced with SO MANY options of how to spend our day once we drive her up there.
One of the options was hiking up to the top of Mt. Crested Butte. I didn't get to climb the peak and ski it during the winter so I was ALL OVER THAT. Plus I can ride a chairlift 2000ft. up, eliminating a grueling hike up a road. The chairlift tops out at 11,875ft. The peak tops out at 12,162ft. This is a no-brainer in my book.
At the base area, multiple people told me there was no way I could take my baby over the scree field to the peak.
Behold:
Yeah, he's a peak bagger. The trick in this case was the Ergo. Remember how I hate the baby backpack? This time, I said screw that, threw him in the Ergo on my front on the way up and my backpack on my back. On the way down, I put him on my back and my backpack on my front so that navigating the scree field would be easier with the weight transfer.
And voila. It was a perfect day. All those naysayers at the bottom? They can suck it.
I will readily admit that I was sore for the next THREE days which I think was due to the descent down the scree field carrying a 17lb. baby plus my backpack. But it was worth it. The views are spectacular and hanging out at the top wasn't so bad either.
Tourists LOVE to make comments about me hiking with a baby. But get this: there was a pregnant lady with her 4-year-old hiking the peak. So really, they just need to chill. Babies go places. They can't protest anyway so why not take them?
Anyway. Mt. Crested Butte, my friends. Come see it for yourself.
