Wherever you are, there you are

In this case, Gunnison, Colorado, our new hometown. On our first week in Gunnison, we set out to do All Of The Things. Because we were excited and because the weather was beautiful and because we could.

Unfortunately, we didn't have any furniture which made our backs hurt and our nights sleepless. We remained undeterred and powered on in the name of exploration.

First stop: Brian's new place of employment. WSCU's mascot is The Mountaineer. Plus one for coolness. Negative one for ferocity. We also introduced Hazel to her new school. This was her outfit of choice.

Next stop: Crested Butte to pick up our season passes and sign Hazel up for 12 weeks of ski lessons. The weather being unseasonably warm meant a distinct lack of snow. Hazel tried to entice Ullr to make it snow with her outfit.

Our landlord took pity on use and loaned us some interim furniture. We were living it up.

My sister Ailey stuck around for a few days after the drive from Portland. We were so so happy to have her. I may have cried a little when she left.

After we saw her off, we did some more exploring. The park across the street from our house has a nice bouldering rock. (and a pretty sweet set of slides for Mini Me).

Knowing full well that it would snow any day now, I took off on my road bike. It was 50-some degrees and sunny. It felt AMAZING.

I even made it to the track for some workouts. The track is just up the street from our new house. No excuses allowed here. Except for when the snow falls, I guess.

I took Hazel up for her first ski lesson (Brian and Tygh stayed home to supervise the unloading of furniture- FINALLY). When we boarded the bus, with a ton of other small children and parents doing the same thing, I almost cried. Teaching Hazel to ski for the past two years has been an experience full of joy and struggle, but mostly solitary. Here, all of the kids learn to ski at a young age. I am THRILLED to turn Hazel over to a qualified professional.

I may have strapped on my skis for some solo turns as well.

Did I mention that I am THRILLED to put Hazel in ski lessons?

And then we had our first real snow at the house. Brian and Hazel promptly went outside to make snow angels and to pretend to shovel off the porch.

I would call our first few weeks in Gunny a success. And we haven't even tried skate skiing, ice skiing, cross-country skiing, ice climbing, ski mountaineering or snow biking yet...
